Mininova sluit torrentplatform

Het zal de volgers van het internieuws niet ontgaan zijn vandaag:

Nu.nl berichtte: “Het Nederlandse torrentplatform Mininova verspreidt voortaan alleen nog werk van artiesten die daar zelf opdracht voor geven. De rest van de omstreden dienst wordt gestaakt.”

En Torrentfreak.com omschreef het als volgt: “Mininova, the largest torrent site on the Internet, has removed all torrents except those that were uploaded through its content distribution service. Mininova’s founders took the drastic decision after they lost a civil dispute against Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN, and were ordered to remove all infringing torrents from the site.”

Met WM Recordings behoor ik al enige tijd tot de officiële “content distributors” van Mininova en de 75 torrents die ik tot nu toe geüpload heb, blijven dan ook gewoon beschikbaar. De honderdste WM-release is inmiddels meer dan 21.000 keer gedownload, waardoor het totaal aantal WM-downloads via Mininova boven de 76.000 komt.

Voor de trouwe bittorrentfans zijn het onzekere tijden, nu zowel The Pirate Bay als Mininova in hun oude vorm verdwijnen en Demonoid al enkele maanden plat ligt. Het feit dat er steeds meer torrentsites bijkomen die het legaal delen van content mogelijk maken, is echter alleen maar toe te juichen.

Op de voorpagina

Twee decennia geleden was het een eer als je op de cover van de Rolling Stone stond. Tegenwoordig is het een eer om op de openingpagina van Mininova te staan. En ja, daar staat de honderdste WM Recordings-release de komende dagen:

WM x 100 / 100 x WM op Mininova

Het levert overigens prachtige reacties op. Zoals deze: “can someone explain whats going on here i listened to track 05 Datapanik and my ears started bleeding , i had to turn down the speakers and wipe the carpet down, this whole torrent sounds creepy bizarre, like old donkey kong or those video games u got in cereals in the old days”.

The Pirate Bay: schuldig

Vanmorgen vond de langverwachte uitspraak plaats in de zaak tegen de Zweedse bittorrent-site The Pirate Bay.

TorrentFreak bericht:

“All four defendants were accused of ‘assisting in making copyright content available’. Peter Sunde: Guilty. Fredrik Neij: Guilty. Gottfrid Svartholm: Guilty. Carl Lundström: Guilty. The four receive 1 year in jail each and fines totaling $3,620,000.”

The Pirate Bay

“The court said that the four defendants worked as a team, were aware that copyrighted material was being shared using The Pirate Bay and that they made it easy and assisted the infringements. It categorized the infringements as ’severe’. The judge said that the users of The Pirate Bay committed the first offense by sharing files and the four assisted this.”

Het Zweedse viertal gaat zeer waarschijnlijk in beroep tegen de uitspraak. In dat geval kan het nog jaren gaan duren, voor er een definitieve uitspraak komt. De site zal voorlopig in ieder geval gewoon blijven bestaan.

Om 1 uur vanmiddag Nederlandse tijd geeft het team van The Pirate Bay een persconferentie.

[update 13:14u] Op de site van The Pirate Bay staat al een korte reactie: “The heroes lose in the beginning but have an epic victory in the end anyhow.”
